Stay stayed in our set for many years. The original version was recorded at Cavalier Studios in Stockport in about 1983. The song has a laid back vibe that this album version emphasises with the addition of strings and muted horns. Catch the original versions in the BAWL Original page and a live version on the Berlin page.

An early Enigma classic. The song bemoans the end, and ultimate failure of the late 70's punk rock ideals and the yearning for something new. The original version can be heard on the Enigma Music page on this website.

Another Enigma classic. The song is about the the rejection of good advice in favour of learning from bitter experience. The 'Love in a cold cold clime' section refers to the Nancy Mitford novel Love in a Cold Climate. A poor quality original version appears on the Enigma Music page on this website.

A very early 1000 Thrills song. This version has had a mid eight and instrumental sections added. The song usually gets people trying to think what other song it sounds like. Keep trying! An early version of this song appears on the BAWL Original page.

The verse and chorus were all I could remember of this 1000 Thrills song. The rest I have added. The sound samples are HAL 9000 from 2001: A Space Odyssey and Forest Gump from the movie Forrest Gump.

An early 1000 Thrills number that never made it out of the rehearsal rooms, let alone to the stage. Always loved the repetition and the ambiguity - Is Mandalay a place, a personal goal or a state of mind?

Martin Tivnan sites the 'late, great Billy Graham' as an inspiration for this song. The preacher sound sample is by Eddie Murphy from the movie Coming to America. But just who or what the Spirit of the Nation really is still unclear. A politician, a dictator, a religious figure? You decide. This was one of a few songs where we played with religious imagery.

Only played a handful of times live, Between the Moon and the Stars always had a James Bond quality. The song was one of the last written and was missed off the International 2 video because the video camera wasn't turned on until the 2nd song in the set. A studio demo of this track can be heard on the BAWL original page.

Hearts and Flowers was a song we couldn't make work and so never made it out of the rehearsal room. I remembered the verse, bridge and chorus but have added the intro, solo, mid 8 and outro. The sound samples are courtesy of the the 1990's BBC production of Pride and Prejudice. The powerful rejection of marriage from Mr D'Arcy by Elizebeth Bennet seemed to fit the song's mood perfectly. And possibly the first time Jane Austen has been sampled in a pop song.
